Field Notes

Description:

I saw this while hiking along Mahoning Creek near Dayton, PA, USA.
This fungus is on a fallen tree trunk and I thought it was pretty.

Habitat:

Moist woodlands.

Notes:

I know this is a common fungus, but I know practically nothing about fungi. I need help naming it.

Nice fungus, Susan! I think this looks like a Phellinus based on the white ring but I am no expert.
Bailey, thanks for trying. :-) I felt the same way. Kept going back and forth between the pictures. Wasn't 100% either.
Hmm... I'm not too sure, but it may be the Phellinus igniarius. I'm not 100% sure, so don't put it down as that. It's just my opinion, and I'm no fungi expert, but Iv'e been comparing the images and it just might be.
