Field Notes

Description:

The moss covered base of a huge tree with hundreds of tubular, aerial roots. The tree probably exceeded three feet in diameter.

Habitat:

Tropical rainforest of the Hamakua district.

Notes:

The aerial roots are positively gravitropic (growing toward the ground) and possibly pneumatophores. This might be a mangrove.

Darn, NatralList, I thought it'd help to narrow things down a bit. Maybe this is an oversized palm species? I now regret not photographing the rest of the tree, haha!
Indeed, Nick! The plants, especially the trees, in Hawaii were all fantastic natural examples. S Frazier, I'm sorry, but I was in quite a rush when I took these; I was getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. I just know that the tree was at least 20 feet tall.
