Oooh one of my favorite beetles! This, I believe, is a "bess bug". Harmless, very slow, and if you pick it up and gently prod it, it will make a soft kissing sound in protest. I've kept them as classroom pets in the past. Eats compost, veggie scraps, and clean mulch. Really.
