Would be good to see the whole of the body, the head can make a difference to the ID.
This is one of the yellowjacket wasps. There are a number of species but you could probably narrow the ID down by starting a search at this location: http://bugguide.net/node/view/554/bgpage. Good luck. Will be interested in hearing what you came up with.
