Field Notes

Description:

Granulated, soft-ball-sized (3.5" diameter) fungus. Tan, brown, and cream colored with distinct ridges. Appears to be one of the large puffballs.

Habitat:

Open, grassy area in east-central Georgia. Photographed at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park near Augusta (Richmond County), GA.

Notes:

Could this be Skull-shaped Puffball (Calvatia craniformis)?
