Hi Melissa Biehl, I did some looking and i came up with a type of Strangler Vine (maybe Honeysuckle). Still looking for scientific name. Its a thin vine that wraps around the tree trunk and over time the trunk distorts and heals over the vine strangling it. The result is the corkscrew shape with no apparent cause. From the second picture it looks like some thin vines and hanging green foliage are visible. Hope this helps!! http://cabinetofcuriosities-greenfingers.blogspot.com/2011/03/strangler.html
