Field Notes

Notes:

This snake crawled across my friends feet. It was in an area surrounded by tall grasses and was after a massive downpour. Think it maybe a viper of some kind. Any ideas?

The area we were standing in wasn't that far from a river and stream. With the torrential down pour of rain there was about a foot of water everywhere so could well be some sort of water snake.
Of course, there's been massive flooding in the area...Can't really see the detail on head but the banding is thin and reaches the ventral area and so doesn't look like the Malayan pit viper or the flat-nosed pit viper, the two (only?) brownish vipers recorded for Java...On the other hand, sometimes the banding on the dog-faced water snake is somewhat closer but I don't really see that much of a general similarity with that snake...I'll revisit this at another time :-)
