Description:

I'm unsure if the brown thing and the white "fluff" are part of the same organism, but I think this is a scale insect

Habitat:

Found on a beach sunflower plant in a suburban yard next to a forest

We don't really make much effort to kill our pests. Most of our plants fight it out alright, and for the ones that don't... we usually have a couple around the yard :) Thanks for the confirmation. I'll look into finding a more exact ID
I think so. I have a faint memory of seeing these things on a bush years ago and being told it was scale. In sufficient numbers it can do damage to your plant. Try an organic method before dousing your bush with chemical pesticides... our bees are really getting hammered these days. Lots of good "recipes" for making your own spray for soft-bodied pests.
