Description:

Hi! My friends and I found this owl in the road with a broken wing. We live in Cheboygan, Michigan, in the Northern Woods. It does not appear to have ears, at least not ones that stick out, and there is white in the wings. Its body is brown. Could you help me ID it? Thanks!!

Habitat:

Northern Woods.

Species ID Suggestions

Northern Saw-whet Owl - fledgling

Aegolius acadicus

It is illegal to have it in your possession (protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act), so if it is still in your possession you should take it to a licensed rehabber that can give it adequate care and hopefully get it released back into the wild. Hope it makes it!
It is hard to identify the bird from this one photo. Do you have photos from any other angles? There is a raptor rehabilitation facility in Empire, Michigan. This would be the place to take an owl with a broken wing. If that is too far for you to travel, you may call them and see if they might be able to retrieve the bird: http://www.wingsofwonder.org/
