Field Notes

Description:

I think it's a "Monk" not sure

Habitat:

Sub base San Diego

Notes:

This little "Sea Devil" was kicked up off the bottom when we were performing a hull cleaning on a sub. When the S.C.A.M.P. passed under the sub to do the belly line, the prop wash from the machine blew the bottom of the bay and this little dude to floated to the surface.
Can y'all tell me what it is? Every old salt I asked, all said they have never seen anything like it in these waters...

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

Definitely a Midshipman (Porichthys sp.) due to the photophores on the bottom. Looks more like plainfin.
