Description:

Large ants were hanging around these aphids. There was only this cluster of aphids on the plants, not on any others

Habitat:

Mexican bluebell in a shady, suburban yard

Aphids. You were observing an interesting example of a symbiotic relationship: the aphids suck plant juices, and eliminate a sweet liquid, which the ants like to drink. So the ants tend the aphids, actually very much like shepherds, protecting them from other insect predators. So the ants get food, and the soft and slow aphids get fierce body guards.
