Field Notes

Description:

Striking bird 7-8.5 inches long. Males are black above and on the head with white patches on wings; breast bright red, belly white. Females are brown above with white patches on wings; breast streaked, eyebrow pale.

Habitat:

Open brushy woods and aspen groves.

Notes:

I have primarily encountered this species in summer. It is less common than the Evening or Pine Grosbeaks.
