Description:

Small black and white bird with small red spot on top of head. White belly, black wings have white bars in almost a zig zag pattern, short beak.

Habitat:

Deciduous and mixed forests of North and South Michigan.

It is hard to tell, but I think I will stay with downy woodpecker because the bird was so small and its beak was quite short.

This is a Downy Woodpecker as already indicated. A Hairy Woodpecker would have a much longer bill in relation to the head.
