Field Notes

Description:

This is the third sub-adult Argiope luzona that I have spotted today. It is very young and only 2 mm. long, but it is the most interesting of the three. The first point of interest, for me, is that its web decoration (stabilimentum) is shaped like the letter "lambda" in the Greek alphabet. This is a very rare type of stabilimentum. Even more interesting is that this sub-adult is only 2 mm. long and it has made a linear stabilimentum. Argiope luzona (according to a scientific paper I have recently read) normally changes from making "discoid stabilimenta" to "linear or cruciate stabilimenta" when it reaches a length of 5 to 6 mm.

Habitat:

Spotted in our backyard on its web at the top of a banana plant, where the main stem (pseudostem) splits into leaf stems. The web was strung between two leaf stems.

Notes:

The first photo shows the spider and its "lambda" web decoration. The second photo is just to show the habitat and to give a better idea of how small this spider is. The two other spottings of sub-adult A. luzona spiders today are:
