They are a silky flycatcher, similar to waxwings in taxonomy and a neo tropical/desert species. I'm not doubting the ID. I only saw them with regularity at Rancho Santa Ana botanical garden in Claremont(San Berdo cnty), although their range is for most of So cal.

In Laguna coast wilderness park....Orange county..some kind of jay? Got only silhouette pic...it was cloudy day..
Out of curiousity, where? I lived down there some 25 years ago and they were an extremely uncommon bird to spot!
