Field Notes

Description:

Green bird, yellow belly, dark wings with (2?) side bars, large eyes, and reddish beak.

Habitat:

Puddle in backyard: yard is in forest on mountain top near river

Notes:

Tried Merlin app to identify but couldn’t really see an exact match. It seems it had some bar markings that the suggested birds didn’t have. Suggested were: female/Juvenile male scarlet tanager or female/juvenile male painted bunting. Contacted Cornell, they confirm juvenile male scarlet tanager. Such a surprise! Hope he returns again when he’s red 😄

Since you have well and truly ID-ed it...perhaps you would like to also include its scientific name. Scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_tanager
