South African Ground Squirrel
Xerus inauris
-20.3395, 14.6777
Field Notes
Description:
This ground squirrel is also known as Cape or (sometimes) African ground squirrel. I found it large for a squirrel, probably twice as large as squirrels I'm used to (European ones) - from a distance, I was not able to recognise due to the size... Books says it is about 50 cm in length, half of which is that bushy tail. It sports earthy colours, upper parts are brown to grey brown, lower parts are whitish, with a neat whitish lateral stripe.
Habitat:
Here, seen in Kunene region of Namibia (northwest), in arid acacia open woodland and rocky escarpments landscape. The region is still very dry, almost desolate, (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, following a three-year dry-spell.
