Field Notes

Description:

Wingspan: Male 100-120 mm, Female 110-130 mm. Sexes very similar. Pale crescent, distal to hind wing costalupper side eye spot, yellow on male, suffused with red on female.

Habitat:

Common and widespread throughout South Africa, particularly in wooded areas and gardens; absent from extremely arid areas. Forest edges, parks and gardens, hill tops, Flatland.

Notes:

Larval food: Cultivated Citrus spp. Also Calodendron capense, Clausena anisata, Zanthoxylum capnse, Vepris lanceolata, Teclea natalensis, Oricia swynnertonii, Toddalia asiatica, Ptaeroxylon obliquum, Hippobromus pauciflorus. In Fynbos and Karoo - Foeniculum vulgare, Peucedanum galbanum, P. gummiferum, Deverra burchelliae
Flight period: Continuous broods year-round, mainly in Sept-May
