Field Notes

Description:

These birds are spotted in the Hong Kong Wetland Park. They are migratory birds but visits Hong Kong often. They hang around peacefully with Cormorants, Herons and Egrets. I was told that the species don't compete for food due to different beak shapes. They were targeting different fishes at different water depth.

Habitat:

They love wetland marshes. In Hong Kong, they are often found in Mai Po Nature Reserve and the neighboring Hong Kong Wetland Park.

Notes:

This is an endangered species. World population is estimated to be less than 3000.
