Field Notes

Description:

Costus barbatus, also known as Spiral Ginger, is a perennial plant with a red inflorescence. It is one of the most commonly cultivated Costus species.

The foliage of Costus barbatus is dark green and fuzzy underneath. The long red inflorescences are complimented with bright yellow tubular flowers. Clumps spread easily and produce plants that normally get to six feet tall.

The most common varieties are found growing naturally in the tropical Americas. Costus barbatus are popular as cut flowers.

Species ID Suggestions

My pleasure Lauret. However, my suggestion was only for the genus and not for a species. I checked through some google images of the barbatus that you have listed and I can't confirm that this speciman is the barbatus. There are many Costus species throughout the Americas as you have mentioned but without seeing the flower and the entire plant it is not reasonable to jump to the conclusion of a species. There is nothing more important at Project Noah than getting the genus and species information correct. There are hundreds of thousands of people depending on the information being 100% correct. If you are absolutely sure leave the scientific information as it is and provide an informational link proving the species information. If you have the slightest doubt, edit the scientific information to costus sp. Thank you so much!!!!!!!! Please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. I am at your service.
This is most likely a Spiral Ginger, Costus sp, Costaceae Nice spotting!
