Field Notes

Description:

This flower has a coarse 1-2 foot stem with oval leaves. Leaves are covered with hairs. The flower-head is 1 1/2 - 2 inches wide with each flower-head having 6-12 florets. The petals are bright yellow and oblong. This flower has a brown flattened cone shaped top.

Habitat:

Habitat include: thickets, meadows, savannas, riverbanks and fields. Grows in sun and partly shaded areas, and in areas where soil is moist or dry. It is drought tolerant.

Is found throughout the United States, and parts of Canada.

These flowers grow in fields around our playground.

Fun Facts: This flower has a variety of common names (black-eyed susan, brown betty, gloriosa daisy, golden Jerusalem, and English bull's eye to name a few). This flower if used by some Native American tribal nations as a medicinal herb. The Brown-Eyed Susan is the host plant for the Silvery Checkerspot caterpillar.
