Field Notes

Description:

A Spreadwing Skipper with clear patches on the wings. These little skippers rarely spend more than a few seconds in one place. They bask on leaves with wings outstretched before darting off again.

Habitat:

Seen along a path through Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, a mosaic of elongated lagoons, connected by creeks, savannas and logwood thickets.

James... My impression was that the patches were clear, though it's not so visible on my poor photos. Though I think the green shows through on Photos 1 & 2. And it seems the row of spots around he Checkered border is missing in my photo. Difficult though, because the spot pattern looks so similar.
Pam the patches on your shots so not look transparent and there are a number of types of checkered skippers. The wing pattern looks right on images I have found. But you saw the butterfly up close so I bow to your choice

thanks James. But this is definitely one of the Spreadwings and quite a bit larger than the Checkered Skipper. I have photos of that also.
