Field Notes

Description:

About twenty species of these epiphytic or lithophytic orchids can be found from Burma, Thailand, Malaya through Indonesia to New Guinea. Species of the genus Arachnis have frequently been used in hybridizing. http://www.orchidspng.com/Arachnis.html They get both their scientific and common name because of their superficial resemblance to scorpions and spiders. These monopodial, terrestrial species generally grow in very bright light, usually full sun, in areas where they receive daily rainfall much of the year.

Habitat:

Growing as an ornamental in a semi-urban yard & garden in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.
