Common Checkered-Skipper

This butterfly was sipping the nectars of a Tall verbena (Verbena bonariensis). This butterfly is a skipper in the family hesperiidae, and is a constant visitor in the garden. These butterflies feed on Hollyhock (Althaea rosea), Marsh-Mallow (Althaea officinalis), Velvet-Leaf Butterprint (Abutilon theophrasti), Tall Wine-cup (Callirhoe leiocarpa), Flower-Of-An-Hour (Hibiscus trionum), Three-Lobe False Mallow (Malvastrum coromandelianum), Carolina Modiola (Modiola caroliniana), Common Mallow (Malva neglecta), Little Mallow (Malva parviflora), Round-Leaf Mallow (Malva rotundifolia), High Mallow (Malva sylvestris), Prickly Sida (Sida spinosa), Narrow-Leaf Globe-Mallow (Sphaeralcea angustifolia), Scarlet Globe-Mallow (Sphaeralcea coccinea) in the area. This butterfly has black and white on the wings, with some gold on the underside.
