Description:

I love the coloring on this lava lizard, who was crouched on the inside of a tree and blending perfectly.

This is a really nice shot! This female Lava Lizard, - and it probably is Microlophus albemarlensis* -, is sitting in a hole in an Opuntia Cactus - and it looks pregant, doesn't it? - For more info go to http://www.wildherps.com/species/M.albemarlensis.html. Also, cosider joining us on www.facebook.com/darwinfoundation. * I doubt it is M. delanonis, a) because the Española female lizard's red actually extends to the top of the head and b) because there are very very few Opuntia cacti left on Española for a lizard to sit on. The introduced goats almost exteminated the Opuntia on that island. But we've gotten rid of the goats some years ago and the Opuntia (and all species depending on it, like Giant Tortoise) is slowly coming back. - But it's hard to really be sure about these seven species, - unless you know on which island you spotted it!
