Congratulations Linda, this incredible find is our Spotting of the Day! "A very rare find today with this beautifully colored and patterned Shield-backed Jewel Bug (Poecilocoris donovani) as our Spotting of the Day! Project Noah contributor Linda Alisto and her 6 y.o. nephew were looking for butterflies in a park in the Philippines when they spotted this rare jewel bug (superfamily Pentatomoidea, family Scutelleridae). Dávid Rédei, a taxonomist and Southeast Asia Pentatomoidea specialist, communicated to Linda: "This species was described from the Philippines, but in fact it occurs in Borneo and the Malay Peninsula too, as I have seen specimens from those areas. It is apparently very rare, one of the rarest Oriental Scutelleridae, among tens of thousands of specimens examined in many museums, I have seen only about ten of this". And here we have an image of a live specimen!" Thanks Linda, fantastic! So David Redei has seen these photographs?
Thanks DanielePralong according to David Redei this species looks quite similar to Poecilocoris latus which is common in NE India, S China and Indo-China, and the two are definitely closely related taxonomically. David Redei also said that "It was described from the Philippines, but in fact it occurs in Borneo and the Malay Peninsula too, as I have seen specimens from those areas. It is apparently very rare, one of the rarest Oriental Scutelleridae, among tens of thousands of specimens examined in many museums, I have seen only about ten of this."
What a fantastic find Linda! Do you have more information about it? I don't seem to be able to find tagged images of this species online, although it's referenced in many collections. The closest I find is P. druraei: https://www.flickr.com/photos/itchydogimages/22381069820
