Kodiak Brown Bear
Ursus arctos middendorffi
57.6319, -152.527
Field Notes
Description:
This lone bear was feasting on all the salmon carcasses that were on the riverbank. The gulls had virtually no fear of the bear, and would get very close to it to get some salmon meat. One time I did see the bear swipe at them in annoyance because they were picking at all the salmon near it.
Habitat:
River far from town with lots of dead salmon carcasses on the shore
Notes:
The abundance of salmon is possibly one reason why Kodiak bears are larger than other bears.
