Western Diamondback Rattlesnake
Crotalus atrox
30.2086, -97.7271
Field Notes
Description:
This poor, unfortunate fellow was injured when a lady ran over him by accident, in the Austin-American statesman parking lot on Montopolis dr. near downtown Austin. She was nearly in tears, because she don't like running over animals.
He was injured, and biting/snapping at anything that moved. He's also quite large for a "City snake". five feet on the nose.
I picked him up with the snake tools I carry in my car, put him in a container, and put him in my trunk. I got a long, loud, and relieved, round of applause for removing it (Felt like a Rock Star for a moment:) ).
Anyways, he was well beyond rehabilitation, and was going to die. So.... I did the only "humane" thing. I covered him with crushed ice, so he could die in his sleep. When I had gotten home, he had passed :( Poor thing. Well, I'm not letting it go to waste, so he's on my dinner menu tonight.
Gorgeous animal, what a shame. At least this one's death wasn't intentional.
NEVER attempt to approach an injured rattlesnake without proper training!!! This one was large enough to carry at least three lethal doses of venom. It was angry, injured, and extremely dangerous! a bite from him would've most likely resulted in a fatal envenomation.
Habitat:
Parking lot, Downtown Austin
Notes:
