Field Notes

Description:

Large woody shrub, 10-12 feet tall, with dense evergreen leaves. Showy pink flowers in clusters.

Habitat:

Open conifer forest around Trillium Lake, a 240-acre man-made lake on the south slopes of Mt. Hood. Moist soil at mid-mountain elevation (about 3600 feet) in the northern Oregon Cascades.

Notes:

Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon.
R. macrophyllum is the state flower of Washington.
