Field Notes

Description:

Distinctive centipede, from the family Scutigeridae, with long and narrow body - body length itself was around 3,5 to 4 cm (without legs). Main color of the body is pale brown, with three parallel black lines on the back. Each segment bears one pair of long legs - these long legs make this centipede so distinctive. Last pair of legs is particularly long. Legs are pale brown and striped black.

Habitat:

Members of this family (and the order) are also known as "House centipedes" indicating where it can often be observed. Indeed, this specimen was spotted late in the night inside our house. Otherwise, it is a very common centipede in the area, usually found in stony maquis and garrigue. Nocturnal, it hides under stones during daytime.
