Description:
The Red-tailed Hawk is a bird of prey, one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk," though it rarely preys on standard sized chickens. Distinguished by having a belly band with non-feathered legs. Large Buteo with a Red tail (normally). Red-tailed Juveniles are one of the hardest raptors to identify with their various markings both present and absent, as well as multiple races from the Kriders (light) to Rufous (intermediate) and Harlan's (Dark).
Notes:
This bird was very clearly clipped by a vehicle next to highway 82 just off from the beach. With one wing raised, this bird was hopping to get out of harms way. I attempted to rescue the bird but my efforts were unsuccessful as it hopped away from me under a barbwire fence onto private property. Given the strictness of Louisiana Trespass laws, I did not venture into the land to further attempt rescue. Hopefully the bruising will heal quick and this bird will live to fly another day.
