Field Notes

Description:

Mushroom with strikingly shaggy cap.
Cap (not completely opened) approximately 6.5- to 7.5 cm diameter with distinct raised dome in the center. Surface smooth brown in center with the remainder of the cap covered with shaggy scales, most of which with turned-up edges, over a white background.
Gills. White; free at stem; crowded with frequent short gills.
Stem. Approximately 6.5 cm tall; approximately 1 cm thick; very slightly thicker at the base than at the cap; Distinct, double-edged ring.

Habitat:

Growing alone in soil with pine needle litter in pine forest near a lake shore. Ground cover, Scuppernongs (Vitis rotundifolia)
