Field Notes

Description:

Wild turkey nest. The second photo is the same nest on 13 days later, on June 1.

Notes:

I found the nest when I accidentally disturbed the mother in a blackberry patch. She moved a few yards away and pretended to be injured, just like in an episode of Wild Kingdom. I took one quick picture and moved on so she could get back to incubating the eggs. No sign of the mom or babies when I went back about two weeks later; just shells.

Thanks, Indawoods. It was definitely special.
Never seen a nest and eggs too, cool
Thanks, DonnaBellenbach. This is the only one I've come across.
My non-expert opinion is that the eggs hatched. I think that if the eggs were eaten, the shells would have been significantly more broken. The fact that the eggs are broken about in half is what I'd expect from hatching.
Do you think they hatched naturally or were found and eaten?
Thanks, YukoChartraw
