Description:
Perennial plant, climbing or sneaking, with large, smooth lobes, often cardioid in the base with short stalk.
Blue-violet, single-breasted flowers, 4-5 cm in diameter, pentamers, with inner scallop tube and long stem.
Habitat:
It is almost everywhere on mainland Greece and the islands in wet, shady places. Cultivated as ornamental.
Notes:
The use of wildflower as a medicinal herb returns to antiquity. Dioscourdes refers to this as a "thorn, dirty, laurel, myrrh or polygon" and attributes to its leaves and stems many therapeutic properties for the treatment of toothache, dysentery and diarrhea.
