Habitat:
Manmade marsh at Colony Farm that was originally built as a swale for drain water from a subdivision on the hill above it. Now an amazing place for wildlife. This female Anna's was taking seed down in her beak and carrying it away, presumably for nest building. Feb 27! early for here and snow still patchy on the ground.
Notes:
Anna's Hummingbirds have gradually been extending their breeding range further north along the west coast of North America. Until recently they had been known to nest along the BC coast but now they are also nesting inland. This marsh is about 20 km from the coast. I will have to check back every few weeks to see if there is any further evidence of breeding here. The Anna's has an unusual reverse migration in that it winters in BC and usually breeds in California, Oregan and Washington. See map on Wiki for more detail.
