European Paper Wasp
Polistes dominula
35.1728, -80.8544
Field Notes
Description:
mistaken for a yellow jacket because of its yellow and black pattern; second picture is of the larvae which is cream colored and fatter than the adults
Habitat:
Urban schoolyard
Notes:
These wasps are tenacious. They build their nests in the holes in the poles of our school chain link fence. They get cleaned out for the protection of unsuspecting children who play close by but they build right back. We have also seen them in birdhouses on campus
