Field Notes

Description:

Aged wood-rotting bracket polypore found on a dead tree stump. Surface dried and cracked. Banding and colour not dissimilar to Rainbow Bracket (Trametes versicolor) also found in the area. These specimens were approx. 12-15 cms wide.

Habitat:

Found in a local park amongst bushland in leafy suburban Sydney. These specimens were found on a dead tree stump along a creek course.

Notes:

Here are two spottings of the same species found in separate locations in Queensland - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/528736015 and http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/229336019 Hopefully I have the correct ID for this spotting.

Indicative of g applantum. If you cut into the flesh you should see brown flesh. Phellinus has a darker underside and different flesh. 100% certain this is ganoderma applantum or analog of.

Thanks, lightworkerpeace, for the ID suggestion. I thought they were a bit large too, and also the cracked surface threw me off. I'll certainly investigate your suggestion.

Hi! This looks a bit large for a Trametes species. It could be in the genus Ganoderma. Perhaps close to Ganoderma applanatum. http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/observation_search?pattern=ganoderma+applanatum

The dry cracking and thickened centre looks familiar. Check Phellinus sp. http://www.anbg.gov.au/fungi/aboriginal.html
