Field Notes

Description:

One of the smaller gull, this bird almost resembles a tern. This one is a non-breeding bird. It lacks the full black hood and only retains a small black patch behind the eyes. Mostly white with pale grey on back and wings, grey borders on wings and tail. Black bill and brown bar that can be seen when wings are folded. Besides fish these gulls can go after insects snatched in flight.

Habitat:

Can be found in marshes, open water, coastal beaches, lakes, and rivers

Notes:

Observed this one following a Brown Pelican and other water birds corraling fish at the shallow end of the lake.
