Carpenter Moth
Zeuzera sp.
15.4558, 119.921
Field Notes
Description:
Zeuzera is a genus in the Family: Cossidae (Carpenter or Miller Moths). "The Cossidae, the cossid millers or carpenter millers, make up a family of mostly large miller moths. This family contains over 110 genera with almost 700 known species, and many more species await description." Wikipedia. I have been unable to identify this specimen down to species level. It bears similarities to numerous specimens shown in https://philepidoptera.wixsite.com/philep, but it is not an exact match.
Habitat:
This Zeuzera sp. flew into our terrace one morning at around 5:30 a.m. when I was having an early breakfast. It flew in circles around the ceiling light a couple of times then landed on the sitting room door. I took some photos and was pleasantly surprised to find that this was another Zeuzera sp. apparently the same as the previous specimen.
Notes:
I found myself feeling contented that the previous, rather weak specimen was not in some way the end of the line for this type of moth (in our immediate area) because here was another. Of course, I was no closer yet to a good identification.
