Florida Sand Skink
Neoseps reynoldsi
29.1112, -82.0148
Field Notes
Description:
About 4" long. Resembles a worm at first glance, but on user look you will see smooth shiny scales, eyes, and a jaw. Very tiny front legs with one toe each foot fit into a groove along the side of the body. Back legs are a bit longer and have two ties each foot.
It lives about 10 cm beneath the surface in sandy soils. It literally "swims" through the sand in pursuit of termites, ant lion larvae, small beetles.
This amazing lizard is found ONLY in Central Florida, in sandy areas with Pine/Turkey oak communities.
It is currently listed as a THREATENED species , but I have found several in my garden soil already. Needless to say, I am thrilled !
Habitat:
Sandy soils with long leaf or sand pines and turkey oaks.
Found about 10cm beneath the surface. They are not seen above ground.
