Field Notes

Description:

Black back medium-sized woodpecker. Throat, chest and belly are white, flanks are streaked with black. The head is black, with a yellow crown and a thin white and black mustache.
Lacks the white streak behind the eyes showed by American Three-toed Woodpecker.

Habitat:

Coniferous forest of the boreal shield. It is often spotted in burned-over areas.
It forages on dead conifers.
