Description:

This jewelled shield bug nymph is a true bug and can be found all around coastal Australia in forested areas. They nymph stage may differ slightly in appearance depending on the food source.

Thanks for the tip martinl, I'm quite convinced now that they are not beetles but instead the nymph stage of a stink bug in the family Scutelleridae.
