Field Notes

Description:

White birds about 2 feet tall, with yellow bills, light yellow eyes, some with light brown rests.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood on mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted in an undeveloped playground/grassy field. This introduced species seems over the past few years to have become much more numerous locally, to the point that they are now considered a threat to native birds. Despite having become common, they do not seem as a result to have become habituated to humans. Rather, they are quite skittish. I was unable to approach them within 30 meters or so. If I tried to get closer, they invariably took flight. Fortunately for this spotting I had a long lens on the camera.
