Field Notes

Description:

Dark brown large conk, when younger looks like hoof. The conk (carpophore) is over 20 cm large at its base, some younger specimens were also around, but difficult to photograph. Mainly black above, covered with some greyish matter, orange edges. Underside cream coloured, pores clearly visible (Photos N° 3 and 4).

Habitat:

Here observed on a long fallen and decaying log in a local wooded park area (mature trees, mixed forest but predominantly deciduous). Montane environment, valley of lake Geneva, just in between of Jura and Alps mountains ranges.
