Field Notes

Description:

Common eland, also known as southern eland or eland antelope, is the largest African antelope belonging to the family Bovidae. It is quite cattle-like in appearance, especially from far away. It is a massive antelope, an adult male up 1,5 m high in shoulder. Coloration is tawny-fawn to grey, with light vertical stripes, more visible on the shoulder than at the rear. They have a hump on the shoulders, and a dewlap at the base of the neck - both features become more prominent in older males. Horns are present in both sexes - horns have several tight twists, and range in length between 60 to 100 cm.

Habitat:

This massive antelope is found in savannas, plains and lightly wooded areas of East and Southern Africa, here observed in Nairobi National Park.

Notes:

As Nairobi National park is very close or almost inside the city, I felt free to include spottings generated there in Urban diversity... please feel free to correct me...
