Field Notes

Description:

These little buggers had dug their "traps?" everywhere. I had noticed them before but previously assumed they had been formed by water dripping from the rock overhead. Got lucky today and saw one of them digging it's hole.

Habitat:

cliff

Look for antlions in barn dirt floors and covered patches of dirt. Places that always stay dry is where they like to be.
Nice antlion larvae you've got there! By the 4th picture it looks like you found a lot! Good luck on the ID
Thank you for getting me started Chief, I will see what I can do to narrow to genus.
I used to love playing with these guys when I was a kid, but I haven't seen one in years. Very cool find! EnvUnlimited, you should only be inviting people to your mission that fit within the 300 mile geographic range. Tennessee is not within that range.
Ant lions :) As a kid, we would trick them into grasping the end of a thin grass blade and "fish" for them!
I remember seeing ant lions on TV and reading about them when I was a kid. I finally saw one a couple of years ago. It was amazing. Nice series!
