Field Notes

Description:

Small duck with a chestnut brown body. Grey bill.

Habitat:

On a tree in a paddy field just outside the boundary netting of the homestay in Koikhali on the banks of the River Matla (Sunderbans area). This is a truly rural setting. I was strolling and just happened to look up...there was this chestnut coloured duck right overhead. Used to seeing urban birds (and waddling domestic ducks) the sight of a duck flying effortlessly startled me...I could not ever switch on my camera.
A little later, there were two ducks overhead and this time I followed them with my eyes...They landed just behind the kitchen but were hidden by the leaves of the tree. I took permission from the cooks to enter the space where they washed utensils ...it was wet and slippery..but there was no other way...I took advantage of the wind that moved the leaves ..and the results are these two usable shots. (Zoom was maxed out)

Notes:

Apparently these ducks nest in trees!
