Field Notes

Habitat:

This Pale Palm Dart was spotted in our backyard, visiting Globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa L.), known in the Philippines as Botones-botonesan. Plant information from http://www.stuartxchange.org/Botoncillo.........

Notes:

Hesperiidae; Hesperiinae; Telicota colon vaja Corbet, 1942. This Skipper Butterfly's common names are, according to Philippine Lepidoptera, the Pale Palm Dart, the Pale-orange Darter and the Pale Darter. The one shown here is a male and it was sipping nectar from a flower. All members of the Subfamily Hesperiinne normally adopt the 'Jet Plane" wing position shown in my photo (with their forewings and hindwings at different angles) when resting. When sipping, their wings are, usually, all closed up. However, there are occasional exceptions and if you look at my photo, you will see that the wings are in the resting position, but the proboscis is out, uncoiled for sipping.
