Field Notes

Description:

This medium sized hover fly is part of a large genus of individuals and presents with large red eyes. It has a wingspan of almost 19mm and a yellow and black banded abdomen. This type favours patches of sunlight in forest gaps and gardens where it hovers with great precision. One theory is that its eyes react better to rivals and other objects glinting as they pass into the patch of sunlight.

Habitat:

Forest Scrub and gardens with medium tree cover and with patches and clearings for sunlight. Is notably absent from drier parts of the region.
