Daedaleopsis septentrionalis
33.9632, -83.727
Field Notes
Description:
Clusters of individual bracket fungi; the largest was approximately 5 cm wide; hemispherical and irregularly shaped. Flat.
Color. Concentric zones of dark and light browns with an off-white margin.
Gills showing distinct ‘dichotomous branching’ with slots; gray-yellow in color, lighter in the smaller polypore.
Habitat:
Bracket fungus found on a recently fallen, lichen-covered branch (approximately 2.5 cm diameter) in a mixed pine/deciduous forest.
Notes:
Based on gill structure, Daedaleopsis septentrionalis appeared to be the best fit for this mushroom.
ITS sequencing has confirmed that these are, in fact, Daedaleopsis confragosa.
